Modelling a silent epidemic:A review of the in vitro models of latent tuberculosis
Tuberculosis (TB) is the primary cause of death by a single infectious agent; responsible for around two million deaths in 2016. A major virulence factor of TB is the ability to enter a latent or Non-Replicating Persistent (NRP) state which is presumed untreatable. Approximately 1.7 billion people are latently infected with TB and on reactivation many of these infections are drug resistant. As the current treatment is ineffective and diagnosis remains poor, millions of people have the potential to reactivate into active TB disease. The immune system seeks to control the TB infection by containing the bacteria in a granuloma, where it is exposed to stressful anaerobic and nutrient deprived conditions. It is thought to be these environmental conditions that trigger the NRP state. A number of in vitro models have been developed that mimic conditions within the granuloma to a lesser or greater extent. These different models have all been utilised for the research of different characteristics of NRP Mycobacterium tuberculosis, however their disparity in approach and physiological relevance often results in inconsistencies and a lack of consensus between studies. This review provides a summation of the different NRP models and a critical analysis of their respective advantages and disadvantages relating to their physiological relevance
On the Relativistic Formulation of Matter
A critical analysis of the relativistic formulation of matter reveals some
surprising inconsistencies and paradoxes. Corrections are discovered which lead
to the long-sought-after equality of the gravitational and inertial masses,
which are otherwise different in general relativity.
Realizing the potentially great impact of the discovered corrections, an
overview of the situation is provided resulting from the newly discovered
crisis, amid the evidences defending the theory.Comment: In press with Astrophys. Space Sci. (The final publication can be

Certification of Bounds of Non-linear Functions: the Templates Method
The aim of this work is to certify lower bounds for real-valued multivariate
functions, defined by semialgebraic or transcendental expressions. The
certificate must be, eventually, formally provable in a proof system such as
Coq. The application range for such a tool is widespread; for instance Hales'
proof of Kepler's conjecture yields thousands of inequalities. We introduce an
approximation algorithm, which combines ideas of the max-plus basis method (in
optimal control) and of the linear templates method developed by Manna et al.
(in static analysis). This algorithm consists in bounding some of the
constituents of the function by suprema of quadratic forms with a well chosen
curvature. This leads to semialgebraic optimization problems, solved by
sum-of-squares relaxations. Templates limit the blow up of these relaxations at
the price of coarsening the approximation. We illustrate the efficiency of our
framework with various examples from the literature and discuss the interfacing
with Coq.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 2 table
A tentative derivation of the main cosmological parameters
Based on the assumption that some apparent properties of the observable
universe are accurate at a reasonable level of approximation, a tentative is
made to independently derive the values of the baryon density parameter, the
Hubble constant, the cosmic microwave background temperature and the helium
mass fraction. The obtained values are in excellent agreement with those given
by the most recent observational data.Comment: 13 pages. Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Scienc
Emergent Universe in Brane World Scenario with Schwarzschild-de Sitter Bulk
A model of an emergent universe is obtained in brane world. Here the bulk
energy is in the form of cosmological constant, while the brane consists of a
fluid satisfying an equation of state of the form , which
is effectively a radiation equation of state at high energies. It is shown that
with the positive bulk cosmological constant, one of our models represents an
emergent universe.Comment: 4 pages, no figure, accepted for publication in Gen.Relt.Gra
Scalar Electrodynamics and Primordial Magnetic Fields
A primordial magnetic field may be generated during an inflationary period if
conformal invariance is broken. We reexamine and generalize previous results
about the magnetic field produced by couplings of the form . We show that the amplitude of the magnetic field depends
strongly on . For adequate values of the field produced can serve as
seed for galactic magnetic fields. We also compute the effective interaction
between the electromagnetic field and the geometry in the context of scalar QED
(with and without classical conformal invariance). In both cases, the amplitude
of the magnetic field is too small to be of astrophysical interest.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, no figure
Non-expanding universe: a cosmological system of units
The product of two empirical constants, the dimensionless fine structure
constant and the von Klitzing constant (an electrical resistance), turns out to
be an exact dimensionless number. Then the accuracy and cosmological time
variation (if any) of these two constants are tied. Also this product defines a
natural unit of electrical resistance, the inverse of a quantum of conductance.
When the speed of light c is taken away from the fine structure constant, as
has been shown elsewhere, its constancy implies the constancy of the ratio e2/h
(the inverse of the von Klitzing constant), e the charge of the electron and h
Planck constant. This forces the charge of the electron e to be constant as
long as the action h (an angular momentum) is a true constant too. From the
constancy of the Rydberg constant the Compton wavelength, h/mc, is then a true
constant and consequently there is no expansion at the quantum mechanical
level. The momentum mc is also a true constant and then general relativity
predicts that the universe is not expanding, as shown elsewhere. The time
variation of the speed of light explains the observed Hubble red shift. And
there is a mass-boom effect. From this a coherent cosmological system of
constant units can be defined.Comment: 8 page
Renal pericytes: regulators of medullary blood flow
Regulation of medullary blood flow (MBF) is essential in maintaining normal kidney function. Blood flow to the medulla is supplied by the descending vasa recta (DVR), which arise from the efferent arterioles of juxtamedullary glomeruli. DVR are composed of a continuous endothelium, intercalated with smooth muscle-like cells called pericytes. Pericytes have been shown to alter the diameter of isolated and in situ DVR in response to vasoactive stimuli that are transmitted via a network of autocrine and paracrine signalling pathways. Vasoactive stimuli can be released by neighbouring tubular epithelial, endothelial, red blood cells and neuronal cells in response to changes in NaCl transport and oxygen tension. The experimentally described sensitivity of pericytes to these stimuli strongly suggests their leading role in the phenomenon of MBF autoregulation. Because the debate on autoregulation of MBF fervently continues, we discuss the evidence favouring a physiological role for pericytes in the regulation of MBF and describe their potential role in tubulo-vascular cross-talk in this region of the kidney. Our review also considers current methods used to explore pericyte activity and function in the renal medulla
Symmetry of the Atomic Electron Density in Hartree, Hartree-Fock, and Density Functional Theory
The density of an atom in a state of well-defined angular momentum has a
specific finite spherical harmonic content, without and with interactions.
Approximate single-particle schemes, such as the Hartree, Hartree-Fock, and
Local Density Approximations, generally violate this feature. We analyze, by
means of perturbation theory, the degree of this violation and show that it is
small. The correct symmetry of the density can be assured by a
constrained-search formulation without significantly altering the calculated
energies. We compare our procedure to the (different) common practice of
spherically averaging the self-consistent potential. Kohn-Sham density
functional theory with the exact exchange-correlation potential has the correct
finite spherical harmonic content in its density; but the corresponding exact
single particle potential and wavefunctions contain an infinite number of
spherical harmonics.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. Expanded discussion of spherical harmonic

Does the Hubble Redshift Flip Photons and Gravitons?
Due to the Hubble redshift, photon energy, chiefly in the form of CMBR
photons, is currently disappearing from the universe at the rate of nearly
10^55 erg s^-1. An ongoing problem in cosmology concerns the fate of this
energy. In one interpretation it is irretrievably lost, i.e., energy is not
conserved on the cosmic scale. Here we consider a different possibility which
retains universal energy conservation. If gravitational energy is redshifted in
the same manner as photons, then it can be shown that the cosmic redshift
removes gravitational energy from space at about the same rate as photon
energy. Treating gravitational potential energy conventionally as negative
energy, it is proposed that the Hubble shift 'flips' positive energy (photons)
to negative energy (gravitons) and vice versa. The lost photon energy would
thus be directed towards gravitation, making gravitational energy wells more
negative. Conversely, within astrophysical bodies of sufficient size, the
flipping of gravitons to photons would give rise to a 'Hubble luminosity' of
magnitude -UH, where U is the internal gravitational potential energy of the
object and H the Hubble constant. Evidence of such an energy release is
presented in bodies ranging from planets, white dwarfs and neutron stars to
supermassive black holes and the visible universe.Comment: 18 pages, including 2 tables, one figur
